I don’t know if what I see on television is true in real life, but it seems like whenever a female character gets dumped by her boyfriend, the following scene is of her eating ice cream straight from the pint container. Because of this, whenever I’ve been dumped by a woman (and you know who you are), I usually slam down a pint of ice cream, which makes me feel good while I’m eating it, but will later pay for it later in the form of five pounds added to my gut.
The problem with eating ice cream straight from the container is that it’s hard to stop while thinking about all the wonderful times I spent with my former significant other while watching reruns of Law & Order. Before I knew it and before Briscoe was able to get a search warrant, I finished the entire pint. Thankfully, the Dreyer’s Slow Churned Snack Size Cups will help curb the gluttony.
Instead of a pint of ice cream, each snack size cup only contains six ounces. But it’s not six ounces of regular Dreyer’s ice cream, it’s six ounces of their Slow Churned ice cream which has half the fat of their regular stuff. It comes only in three flavors: Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate and Vanilla Bean.
A container of the Vanilla Bean has 150 calories, 5 grams of fat, 3 grams of saturated fat, 17 grams of sugar and 4 grams of protein. The Chocolate contains 170 calories, 6 grams of fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, 20 grams of sugar and 5 grams of protein. The Mint Chocolate Chip has 210 calories, 8 grams of fat, 5 grams of saturated fat, 21 grams of sugar and 5 grams of protein.
I LOVE how when something has less fat, they jack up the sugar content to hide how gross low fat actually tastes. Clever bastards.
This is a FANTASTIC idea! Ben & Jerry’s has been killing it with their “snack size” offerings.
Back when the Slow-churned variety came out they awarded ice cream parties to a select few and I won one 🙂

They’re actually pretty damned good.
I can’t wait to find these in my supermarket. I am so bad at the portion control that I have to buy these types of things! I do luv their ice cream.
Hmm. I don’t know if I like this trend. I have more of an interest in “meal size” or “buffet size” when it comes to ice cream.
Mmm ice cream… 🙂
See I could never eat when I broke up with someone.. there was no hiding in the ice cream. Now if nothing is on tv.. not even an old L&O rerun.. I eat ice cream!
Have you noticed that the double churned low fat is better then the regular double churned?
@Erika: Mmm…gross low fat.
@Bear Silber: I think Haagen Dazs also has small snack sizes too, but I think the B&J and HD snack sizes are half the size of these.
@amanda: I do enjoy the Slow Churned stuff, although I haven’t had some in a while. I wish they had more flavors though. Cookie dough?
@Orchid64: I prefer trough size.
@lex: I haven’t tried the double churned low fat, actually I didn’t know a double churned exists. I wonder if they’ll be a triple churned that has no fat.
Hmmm I don’t like the fact that they only offer three flavors, that’s kinda a jip, I mean it shows a complete lack of….dedication to fan favorited flavors… I know it’s not exactly the “breakup flavor” but my favorite ice cream flavor is strawberry
Who the heck decided it was okay to only offer three flavors in the smaller portioned size… that’s not okay, I mean some of us larger people of the world need stuff like this, and I might add that I/we (me and this girl I know named Sylvia) need this….. okay I’m sorry, rant over
Dryer’s can kiss my double wide ass. Mr. Grinder works in an ice cream plant. What good is portion control sizes for that?
Checking out the nutritional information for regular Dreyer’s, it doesn’t appear that the slow-churned stuff has that much more sugar. A half-cup of regular vanilla has 15 g.
The slow-churned ones are really good. Apparently they use some technique called low-temperature extrusion to get that creaminess normally missing in regular lite ice cream. (Yay, food science!)
I Hate the low fat stuff I dont care how many times they churn the shit. Its gross and does not do anything for me.
THAT IS ALL
I hate low fat stuff too, it never taste right and is usually filled with more salt or sugar to hide the truley wretched result of a inferior product…. anyway, three flavors, that’s BS!
this is the kind of product that makes me sad. This is nearly as bad as the shop nearby that sales “Diet Philly Cheesesteaks” and “Reduced Fat Buffalo Wings” I may be a slightly deranged gun-toting hobo, but I know good-eats and reduced portions or diet foods ain’t it. I think they have their heart in the right place by offering smaller portions (even if the portion is just enough to make you mad) but it’s poorly executed and with three flavors it’s not enough variety…… I think I’m going to have to go have a good stern talk with the minds behind this.
@Villain was born like this…: Strawberry, eh? the next time I eat Neapolitan ice cream, I’ll make sure to leave the strawberry ice cream for you.
@Walter B.: I’m sure they’re just trying it out to see if it will be popular enough and if it does turn out to be popular then they’ll probably add more flavors.
@grinder: I used to work for a dairy and stole egg nog during the holiday season.
@Anna: Yay for food science! I wish it could come up with a way to make lettuce last forever.
@Neil the hammer: But have you tried the Slow Churned stuff? It’s surprisingly good, but just don’t get the plain vanilla one.
@Woodenhand: I’m sure they’ll eventually add more.
@Hobo With a Shotgun: I think it’s impossible to have diet Philly Cheesesteaks.
I think mint chocolate chip is the worst ice cream flavor ever. I hate mint in dessert, I always have. I used to be so disappointed as a kid at birthday parties when the ice cream was mint chocolate chip. And then some kids would have the nerve to have a non-chocolate cake.
@Natalie – Haha, that’s funny. I didn’t used to be a fan of MCC either but it’s ALL my brothers would eat. I don’t mind it so much now as long as it’s got some nice chunks/chips in there, I don’t care for the small shaved pieces.
I don’t know about the chocolate cake….when it comes to birthday cakes (the ones usually purchased at the supermarket on the way to the party) the vanilla usually comes through stronger….the chocolate is normally very generic tasting and never moist enough….that’s one you’ve got to bake yourself…then of course chocolate is best….well German Chocolate to be exact 🙂
This is something I would love.
@Natalie: I think it’s the color that turns me off of mint chocolate chip. It’s a color that I would usually find with toothpaste.
@Bear Silber: Dobash FTW!
@theskinnyplate: I want to love them too, but they don’t have them here yet.
@Marvo – Wow, I’ve never even heard of the Dobash…what makes it so good?
