Redesign Time takes a look at packaging design changes.
Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts is on shelves again this year. But it has a new box design that’s heavy with the darker hues of fall and Thanksgiving, making it significantly dissimilar to the previous designs.
What’s throwing me off about this design is the pumpkin pie image. At a quick glance, it also kind of reminds me of the top of a plump turkey that’s about to be someone family’s Thanksgiving dinner. The style of it looks like the pumpkin pie 80’s Scooby Doo and Shaggy would eat in the Mystery Machine. (Photo via Amanda Y.)
Above is the box it came in when it made it debut back in 2010. Wait…2010? Doesn’t it seem like it’s been around for longer? Anyhoo, I should mention this is one of the best Pop-Tarts flavors ever.
Although, if you read my review, you might not think so. But time changes people, folks. In that review, I said it was in my top 10 of favorite Pop-Tarts flavors. But it’s definitely in my top 5 now. What’s my top 5? Um, I know one of them is this Pop-Tart, but I can’t think of the others off the top of my head. Too much pressure, man!
That 2010 design lasted ONE YEAR.
Okay, it was technically still there, but it had been shrunken and cropped thanks to the yellow border needed to show off the “Limited Edition” in a font you’d usually see used as a title in PowerPoint presentations. This was when all the limited edition Pop-Tart boxes got the new design.
But not only did the 2010 design last a year, so did a vitamin or mineral added to the toaster pastry. If you look at the original, it has seven vitamins and minerals, but a year later there’s only six. (Photo via Blaire.)
In 2014, the box got a major design change.
It still had the yellow border, but instead of a fitting font for a PowerPoint, the “Limited Edition” now came in a type that makes me think of jungles for some reason (it’s also used in the current design). Along with the obligatory fall trees and leaves, this box also featured a pumpkin patch. Looking at all the designs, I have to say this one is the most appealing. (Photo via Robbie.)
