For those who don’t know, Grimaldi’s is a pizzeria with roots in Brooklyn. Or rather, one root – Patsy Grimaldi. His experience stemmed from working from a very young age in their family pizzeria owned by his uncle, who also was named Patsy (Lanceri) who started Patsy’s Pizzeria back in the 1930s. Sadly, Grimaldi did not inherit the rights to Patsy’s Pizzeria when Lanceri passed away in the 1970s and Patsy’s Pizzeria was sold to someone outside the family (an employee) in the early 1990s.

Before the sale of Patsy’s Pizzeria, Grimaldi open an unaffiliated Patsy’s Pizzeria in Brooklyn. A few years later there was a suit over the name and that original Brooklyn location was changed to Grimaldi’s Pizzeria. It expanded to two additional locations in New Jersey before Grimaldi retired in the late 1990s and sold the name and franchising rights outside of the two Jersey based locations. Since the sale, there have been many franchises opened in 10+ other states all over the country.

Sadly, Patsy Grimaldi passed away just this past Thursday (Feb 13) at age 93.

It seems a bit important to stress that Grimaldi’s in its entirety is a pizzeria based restaurant. They have some appetizer and dessert options too, but they do not serve pasta of any kind.

This is not to say or indicate the sauces mentioned here are bad quality. But the tag line Grimaldi’s is using for these sauce products is, “From our kitchen to yours”.

So at a retail price of $13 for a 24 ounce standard size jar, just be aware of the history and cautious with any purchase. Who knows? Perhaps it’s fantastic.
