Some of the things I think about when it comes to delicious pizza are how unhealthy they are, how greasy they are and what my face looked like when I was 13 years old, but health nutty companies like Kashi and Amy’s are making pizzas a little bit healthier by not topping theirs with meat products. That’s great, but the new Kashi Sicilian Veggie Pizza has gotten me worried because it doesn’t have cheese.
The Sicilian Veggie is a stone fired pizza covered with caramelized onions, grilled eggplant, fire roasted red peppers on top of a balsamic infused white bean tomato sauce. But, again, there’s no cheese.
According to my computer’s dictionary, a pizza is, “a dish of Italian origin consisting of a flat, round base of dough baked with a topping of tomato sauce and cheese, typically with added meat or vegetables.”
See what it said? Pizza has to have cheese. Because it’s in a dictionary, I believe it to be fact, and my computer’s dictionary doesn’t lie because it has a picture of Spencer Pratt under the definition for “asshole.”
So, technically, the Kashi Sicilian Veggie isn’t a pizza, but Kashi’s other new pizza is one. The Mexicali Black Bean Thin Crust has a whole grain crust topped with a spicy black bean and tomato sauce blend, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, fire roasted corn, tomatillos, poblano peppers and red peppers.
Now that’s a pizza.
One-third of the Sicilian Veggie has 200 calories, 5 grams of fat, 0.5 grams of saturated fat, 530 milligrams of sodium, 120 milligrams of potassium, 37 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber and 11 grams of protein. While a serving of the Mexicali Black Bean has 210 calories, 7 grams of fat, 3 grams of saturated fat, 560 milligrams of sodium, 27 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber and 13 grams of protein. Both pizzas also contain 9 grams of whole grains and 340 milligrams of ALA Omega-3s per serving.
The pizza is a lie.
(also why isn’t there a fan page for TIB on facebook? make one!)
I don’t know if I should say this but I’m going to anyway (sighs) a pizza that doesen’t have cheese on it is sort of like diet buffalo wings or a philly cheesteak light* or ordering a double whopper with cheese with a large fry and washing it down with diet coke. I’m sure some foppish gourmet worked a long time to develop this creation (which shall’t not be called pizza) but it just doesen’t sound like it would be worth eating… I’m just sayin’
Well I’m pretty sure you’re joking about this but just for those who might have not gotten the joke, Napoletan pizza has no cheese. And I never had greasy unhealthy pizza until I moved to the States, which the first couple of times… gave me diarrhea.
I rather like pizza without cheese, but then I’m just your typical gourmet Californian enjoying sunny weather in the wintertime, so my pizza opinions are very, very suspect. I don’t even fold NY style pizza… I eat it with a fork.
Blah blah blah. From Sicily to Australia to NYC, it’s profoundly simple to find non-cheese (‘marinara’) pizzas and tomato pies. Just because Domino’s-fed chubby Americans cry ‘foul’ doesn’t denote inauthenticity. Probably the contrary.
On the other hand, I have no place in my heart for these overpriced, shrink-wrapped hippie pies.
Hahahahaha (too pretty much the WHOLE review and all the comments)!!!
They were probably trying to market it as vegan…anything on the box there about that?
X.
I’ve lived in several places and I can assure you that I am not Dominoes fed or chubby, I just know that I don’t like tomato pies, I will say that some of the best pizzas are the simplest, but again I just wanted to point out that though I am profoundly american, I’ve had the chance to travel all over the globe, and while you are right in that tomato (non-cheese) pies are widespread, I don’t enjoy them, and that I am not a slave to overpriced overly fatty pizza chains…
I’ve actually had the mexicali black bean and it was quite delicious, I loved the flavors and found it to be very energizing (and no I’m not a vegan or vegetarian)!
angry bob used to know a dish of Italian origin, but that was before he met mrs. angry bob. He doesn’t remember any Mexicala black bean on her, though there might have been some Durban Poison involved.
I don’t wanna sound like a wet blanket, but I think I’ll stick to homade pizza. I’m sure that kashi’s pizzas are good but I always enjoyed making my own.
I ate the Mexicali one the other night. It was pretty bland and disappointing. The Roasted Vegetable Kashi pizza is actually pretty decent though.
Best frozen pizza though is California Pizza Kitchen Thin Crust BBQ Chicken
I love Kashi pizza. The other veggie pizza is my favorite. I don’t think I will be trying the other veggie one without adding lots of cheese.
Gotta disagree with Herb Buster, the best frozen pizza of all time is Mystic Pizza.
The whole point of pizza is the excuse to eat a crapload of melted cheese.
Thanks to ^this attitude, one may find it difficult to find a decent crust in many major American cities.
I love all things Kashi. Kashi pizza ROCKS even if they are not technically pizza.
TOMATO PIE. Youz gotz to be from the Philly/Trenton NJ area to really appreciate the stuff. Nuf said.
What the fuck was Kashi smoking when they thought pizza sans cheese was a good idea? Wouldn’t it have been a much better idea to do a veggie flatbread entree as opposed to wasting my time!? Answer: Yes.
Love, Gimmeyummy
^ Amy’s and Trader Joe’s have been successfully marketing frozen cheeseless pizzas for years, so Kashi was probably smoking their competitor’s sales figures.
