REVIEW: Rold Gold Recipe No. 5 Savory Butter Pretzel Twists

Rold Gold Recipe No 5 Savory Butter Pretzel Twists

What are Rold Gold Recipe No. 5 Savory Butter Pretzel Twists?

We may never know what happened to recipes one through four, but recipe number five kicks off Gold Rold’s new presumably premium line of pretzels. Savory Butter is the name of this game, and it tastes like these pretzels came to play.

How are they?

Despite the vague “savory butter” title, these pretzels pack a lot more flavor than I expected. They’re definitely buttery, but they also have a prominent garlic and onion flavor that’s just bold enough to let the butteriness shine. They have a soft toothy crumble and decisive salty pop that make them nearly impossible to stop eating.

I would have no problem if these were branded as garlic bread pretzels because the sharp and addictive flavor reminds me distinctly of two things – Texas Toast and Papa John’s Special Garlic Sauce. They also taste like Rold Gold’s Butter Checkers with the shape and texture of the brand’s Honey Wheat Braided Twists that’s been dunked in garlic bread seasoning. And, honestly, it’s a beautiful combination.

Anything else you need to know?

As we often get swept up in the latest Sour Patch Kids or Oreo collaboration, it’s good to be reminded that oftentimes simpler is better. Adding a new seasoning on a classic twisty pretzel might be all we need to feel truly at peace with our snacking self.

Conclusion:

Much like their “No. 5” name can allude to, these pretzels are an absolute symphony of flavor. For a mainstream snack food, they carry a bit of a hefty price, but that comes along with a hefty experience that should not be missed.

  1. I just saw these at Weis Market today. I was trying to decide between these and the Utz Pub Stix. The Pub Stix packaging read “Zesty Seasoned Mini Pretzel Twists.” The Rold Gold no. 5 simply read Savory Butter pretzels. Time after time, I get sucked in to the lure of butter pretzels, and, more often than not, I am woefully disappointed by the lack of butter taste. So, I purchased the Utz Pub Stix (at $5.99 for a 14 oz. bag). I just can’t handle another disappointment right now (I am looking in the mirror at my homemade hair cut right now 🙂 I will let you know how the Pub Stix taste. I do remain ever hopeful, though, and I will pick up a bag of the no. 5 the next time I see them

  2. Wonder if this is their stab at copying Dot’s Pretzels. sounds like the same flavor profile

    1. Having recently tried both, they are absolutely copying Dot’s. Both were really good. Dot’s is better, they are smoother with a more uniform taste. Number 5 has a more prominent “burnt” taste, not in a bad way, maybe more “toasty”.

  3. The Utz Pub Stix taste like garlic, with a tiny bit of jalapeno (zesty), some kind of cheese (similar to a Dorito) and almost a hint of ?, maybe, pineapple (hence the tanginess). The taste reminds me of Boursin cheese on steroids. Oddly, the one flavor that they are lacking is pretzel. Not bad, but a bit pricey for a repeat purchase,

  4. I love love love these pretzels!!! Because of a medical condition I can not eat popcorn anymore which I love. I have been searching and searching for something that could take the place of one of my favorite snack. These I believe have done the trick. I hope this isn’t just a test drive for them that will fade away and I won’t be able to find them again.

  5. Delicious! My whole family, from toddlers to Grandparents love them.
One bag doesn’t last long. They are a little pricey but worth it.
Only complaint is they are a little hard to find so when I do find them
    I buy 4 bags at a time.

  6. I have NEVER understood why people liked pretzels….until these! Finally, a pretzel that TASTES like something. So far, Rolled Gold Recipe Nos. 5 & 4 are my all-time favorite crunchy snacks. Cant wait for 3, 2, 1! Bring ’em on!!
