What is the Sonic Chili Cheese Coney-Flavored Slim Jim?
A heftily titled snack, for starters. Everyone’s favorite dead wrestler-endorsed snack tube gets blasted with an infusion of chili-dogginess from a beloved drive-in fast food chain that used to be endorsed by a 1960s teen heart-throb/singer/beach-movie idol. This is, perhaps, the most quintessentially possible American foodstuff.
How is it?
Weird! It’s a Slim Jim, right? Which we’ve all had and are familiar with. Chewy, snappy, a little spicy, but then you’re hit with the undeniably unmistakable undercurrent of chili from Sonic.
It tastes like maybe you took your Slim Jim and used it to stir up a big bowl of Sonic chili. (Side note: can you actually get just a side of chili from Sonic? I only know it from its appearances on top of hot dogs or blanketing a basket of tots.)
Anyway, the chili is spot-on. There is no noticeable cheese component, however, which feels like a miss. How hard would it have been to inject this stick with some artificial cheese? Seems like they missed an easy layup.
Overall, despite perfectly capturing the essence of Sonic’s chili, the entire thing is mediocre.
Anything else you need to know?
1) As demonstrated in the picture, this Jim degloved much easier than previous models.
2) Per a quick Google search, Frankie Avalon, the heart-throb mentioned in the first paragraph, is still alive. I feel like he would have been near the top of my “are they or aren’t they?” list. Good for Frankie!
Conclusion:
This isn’t a thing that anyone needs in their life, but if you are a big fan of snackable meat sticks, it’s probably worth a whirl. The novelty alone makes it worth trying, but I wouldn’t exactly go out of my way to find it.

Also, I am not at all familiar with Slim Jim’s, because I hate beef jerky and other similar products. There’s only one jerky I ever loved and they don’t make it anymore. It was the Thai Style flavor beef jerky by Jack Link’s. That stuff was literally like crack it was so f’ing good!!!!!!!! I wish they would bring it back, despite the inevitable damage it would do to my waistline. 😀
I found them at a local Walmart a few weeks and bought three because I like the occasional Slim Jim and I love Sonic’s chili-cheese coneys. However, I was not impressed with the flavor at all. Yes, I could taste the chili component that, I guess, was somewhat Sonic-esque? I also agree with Brandon about the lack of cheesiness. After a couple of bites, I threw the rest of the opened one away and gave away the other two. A swing and a miss for me.
Here in Cincinnati there is a bar/restaurant that does deep fried cheese coneys about once a year. This year they’ve been doing them all month long and even have an eating challenge: 5 coneys and a side of fries under 69 minutes.
They’ve also done a pop-up a couple of times now as a play on Sonic, called “Chronic.” And they serve coneys and CBD tiki cocktails that are all skated out to you curbside. It’s amazing.
If only someone could tell me the name of the bar/restaurant so I can become a patron of their establishment…

Hey I’m only 2 hours east of you here in Ohio. I love chili cheese coneys but, don’t hate me, I’m not a fan of Cincinnati style chili. I’m more of a Tex-Mex style fan. That’s why I pick Gold Star over Skyline. Oh how I miss my home state of California and a Wienerschnitzel chili cheese dog!
But yea next time I go to Jungle Jim’s I now have an excuse to come to Cincy and find this place!
