What is Post Birthday Cake Pebbles?
Post Consumer Brands has released Birthday Cake Pebbles, a new version of the Flintstones’ favorite breakfast cereal in honor of its 50(million?)th birthday. Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles have stood the test of time, but will these live up to the legacy?
How is it?
I pour the multi-colored flakes into my stoneware bowl and add a splash of whole milk. I’ve had many birthday-flavored snacks over the years, but I’m still not any closer to knowing what birthdays actually taste like.
Some are bright and lemony, some are a buttery vanilla, and others just have confetti sprinkles thrown on them. Classic Pebbles have a vivid fruity flavor, whereas this Birthday variant is more subdued. I’m reminded of the toasted flavor of Rice Krispies, though these are much sweeter and have that ineffable essence of birthday.
With that said, they’re so easy to eat! The “Bliss Point” (look it up) of this cereal was perfectly calculated by food scientists because I couldn’t stop shoveling them into my mouth. My carefully measured suggested serving-sized 39-gram bowl was gone in about 30 seconds, and my second free pour serving didn’t last much longer.
One drawback of all the Pebbles family of cereals is that they get soggy almost immediately upon contact with milk, though these didn’t last long enough for that to be a problem.
Anything else you need to know?
I was one of those weird kids who liked “grown up” cereals, so I was more likely to have Basic 4 in my bowl than Fruity Pebbles. This has only gotten worse as I’ve grown older; I mostly eat Original Fiber One these days. And I like it. At this rate, I expect I’ll be eating literal pebbles during my old age for the mineral content.
Conclusion:
I normally don’t like super sweet sugar bomb cereals, so the slightly muted birthday cake flavor, while still being plenty sweet for kids, was perfect for my bran-eating self.

“muted” flavor with 15 grams of added sugar? damn! where’s it all hiding?
So these are flakes rather than crispies? And do I understand no fruity flavor? These may be worth trying if that’s the case. They sound good and I don’t use milk so that doesn’t matter to me. Thanks for the info.
hi there – i am not the reviewer, just a commenter, so i am not sure. they look like crispies to me, rather than flakes, but i can’t speak to the texture first-hand. what i gather from the review is that these are likely crispies with a sweet vanilla (stereotypical birthday cake) flavor, but i have not tried them personally.
They are the rice “crispies” that Fruity Pebbles always use just with different artificial flavourings added.
Thanks Holly May and Ivan. I’ll take a pass though they sound good. Maybe a good candidate for Krispie treats though. Hmmmm.
Hehe, sadly that’s about average.
I think the very fact that he did review something that he may not typically like, in fact, proves that he *does* have an open mind. Likewise, it shows just how tasty this product seems to be.
You may wish to ponder these two things…Rachel.
Ha! The resident troll is easy to spot from a mile away. Hopefully the reviewer won’t pay no heed.
These Pebbles sound interesting. My first thought when this Birthday variety was announced was that they sounded too sweet but after reading the review I’m actually thinking they might be worth trying.
Yes…I thought the exact same thing, initially, regarding the sweetness level. At first, they sounded disgustingly sweet, to me (simply upon reading the name of the product). But this review made it sound as though they may actually be worth checking out.
So I will argue that this review wasn’t really that conclusive or very descriptive of the flavour profile. I am imagining that the flavour is just super vanilla heavy; that seems to be the go to “birthday cake” flavour accompanied by rainbow sprinkles (aka sugar).
And also, in reference to your response to the resident troll (we see you everywhere, Rachel/Anastasia) I respect that someone who doesn’t typically eat sugary cereals reviewed it as perhaps they approached it with a less biased opinion. AND, if someone who DID consume a lot of sugary cereals, perhaps they would just rave about it?
Hmmm…philosophical conundrums of reviews.
tehehehe…yep. high five Tamme!
