What is Blue Bell Coconut Cream Pie Ice Cream?
It’s a whole lotta coconut with coconut flavored French ice cream with coconut flakes and pie crust pieces and whipped topping with toasted coconut.
How is it?
As one reader astutely pointed out in the comments in the prior “Spotted” posting for this ice cream, coconuts are among the most polarizing of all foods, right up there with black licorice and pineapple on pizza. There’s just not much middle ground for most people, including my wife and me. She loves coconuts, and I think they look ugly and taste nasty. But somehow we make our relationship work, despite widely divergent views on the subject.
Since it would be hard for me to objectively review this ice cream, I gave her the chance to experience the prestige, power, and considerable wealth that comes with being a reviewer for The Impulsive Buy!
So what did she think of it?
Well, she loved it, and surprisingly, I sort of liked it too. I didn’t like it enough to ever eat it again due to my dislike of all things coconut, but if Blue Bell ever does any different cream pie flavor in the future, then I’ll be all over it.
The ice cream is wonderfully smooth and creamy with a very subtle coconut flavor. At first, my wife and I both thought our tub didn’t have any pie crust pieces, but after a few bites, we did indeed find some of the elusive gems. The crust pieces are virtually the same color as the ice cream, but they are worth the search as they have a great crumbly texture and buttery flavor. There are coconut flakes in the ice cream, which are also hard to see, but they don’t have much of an impact on the taste because they are so small.
As for the whipped topping, it has a bit of a Cool Whip vibe to it. The toasted coconut is what really delivers the signature coconut flavor here, and although that didn’t do much for me, it sent my wife into ice cream bliss. She just gave it one thumb up instead of two, but that’s only because she was using the other hand to eat a bit more.
Anything else you need to know?
Coconuts are really bad for you! OK, let me rephrase that because I don’t want to feel the wrath of the coconut industry. They are not bad for you, and they are an amazingly versatile fruit (not a nut) that can be eaten and used in many ways, including oil, water, milk, and over-priced carved souvenirs for tourists. But according to the USDA, if you eat an entire medium coconut (I assume minus the shell), you will consume 118 grams of saturated fat. How much is that, you ask? Well, that’s 590% of your recommended daily value, which seems like a lot. So don’t eat a whole coconut.
Conclusion:
Kudos to Blue Bell for making a coconut ice cream that someone who has strong anti-coconut feelings can almost enjoy. If you do like the flavor of coconuts, you are wrong, but this is an ice cream you really should try.

I’m a coconut lover, and i was really disappointed by this one.
If it was labeled “french vanilla with coconut” or something, i would have been fine with it. But it, in no way, lives up to a coconut cream pie (in either taste nor texture). I think it was missing a coconut custard or just some amped up flavoring.
It was good, but i didn’t even finish a serving before i got bored with it.
almost makes me wish every review had two perspectives to deliver the observations.
i’d probably like this a lot, but i’ll never buy it. i almost never get tubs larger than a pint (Tillamook brand being the occasional exception).
i love pie/cobbler/crisp ice creams tho… still mad that Ben & Jerry’s discontinued Willie Nelson’s Peach Cobbler ice cream and that was like, 15 years ago.
Walmart has the coconut cream pie in pints
(also loooooved Willie’s peach cobbler too! That, and Wavy Gravy, were my favorite B&Js ice creams)
Blue Bell does make pints, including (most?) of the newer/limited flavors, so maybe you’ll spot it at some point.
Not if the grocery stores where they live are anything like the ones where I live. They only stock Blue Bell pints in the most common/popular flavors. Dutch chocolate, vanilla, cookies and cream, etc. Strawberry is just about the “most unusual” BB pint flavor you can find, sadly. But I hope they can get it in a smaller size. It’s disappointing to be stuck with bad ice cream.
the walmart near me carries Blue Ribbon and Blue Bunny, but no Blue Bell.
occasionally i make errand runs with friends to the Fred Meyer, Target, Safeway, & Grocery Outlet in the area, but I also don’t drive, so those aren’t frequent options.
An amusing review–thank you! I like the coconut flavor well enough, I just have an aversion to the texture. Obviously they can leave that part out and just give us the flavor, so why don’t we get a choice? Like we do with pulp in orange juice? or caraway seeds in rye bread? In fact, those gritty annoying flakes and strings and bits don’t even taste like much. It gets stuck in my teeth, so I avoid it which means that’s one cream pie I have to miss out on–life is so unfair!
I never thought that one of my comments would be mentioned in a review. This blog sure has gone downhill, LMAO. Nah, I’m just kidding. 😀
Yo famous! 😉
I can understand the polarising opinions on black liquorice (i love it, as long as its not a scandi super salty kind) but i have to say i don’t get the view on coconut being so strong.
Unlikely to get anything like this in the UK, but it sounds really nice!
Coconuts are not bad for you at all! The saturated fat that they contain is a shorter chain (MCT) and metabolizes differently in your body. It’s energy is not stored, rather is used quickly and is beneficial in improving brain function.
I love coconut cream pie. I was excited to try Blue Bell’s rendition and was sorely disappointed. I don’t like the texture and the flavor is too strong. I almost threw the remainder of the half gallon away but I choked it down over several days.
My wife and I love Blue Bell ice cream and we love coconut cream pie, but neither of us like this ice cream. It is too sweet and leaves a funky taste in our mouths. Now I have two flavors I dislike including coffee flavored Blue Bell.
BEST ICE CREAM EVER!
