SPOTTED ON SHELVES – 9/12/2012

Here are some new products found on store shelves by us and your fellow readers. We may or may not review them, but we’d like to let you know what new items are popping up. We’ll also occasionally throw in an unusual product.

Keebler Cinnamon Roll

The Keebler elves bake their cookies in a tree, but why doesn’t the tree catch on fire? I swear Keebler made cinnamon roll cookies before. Or maybe I’m confusing Keebler with another snack company since Cinnabon is willing to put their cinnamon in anything.
Junk Food Guy and Option Pitch and Waffle Crisp reviewed these cookies. (Thanks for the photo, Andrew!)

Oh, Special K. When you started off as a horribly bland cereal, did you ever imagine yourself in every grocery store aisle possible? You’re prominent in the cereal and snack aisles, and with these Flatbread Breakfast Sandwiches, you’re slowly expanding your presence in the frozen food aisle. (Thanks for the photo, Adam!)

Because I love Red Velvet Cupcakes but hate baking, I’m so looking forward to having someone else buy and bake these for me.

Sure, it’s nice that Progresso is making meal preparation a little easier with their Recipe Starters, which comes in Fire Roasted Tomato, Creamy Portabella Mushroom, Creamy Three Cheese, Creamy Parmesan Basil, and Creamy Roasted Garlic. But why would I start a recipe if I can just not start one at all by heating up a can of Progresso soup? Easy-peasy.

Smirnoff Kissed Caramel

I’ve been watching a show on Spike TV called Bar Rescue which involve a bar expert fixing money losing establishments. Every episode has a segment that involves an expert mixologist who comes up with new drinks. This segments are also basically Smirnoff ads, so I expect to see the new Smirnoff Kissed Caramel vodka to end up on the show in the future. But this isn’t the only new sweet Smirnoff vodka. There’s also an Iced Cake vodka, which joins the Whipped Cream and Fluffed Marshmallow flavors. (Thanks for the photo, Lauren!)

NEWS: Limited Edition Candy Corn Oreo is Just One More Thing Candy Corn Haters Will Avoid This Fall

Candy Corn Oreo on Shelf

Update: Click here to read our Candy Corn Oreo review

Whenever Halloween rolls around, companies roll out their brownish red carpets for their fall flavors, 85 percent of which are pumpkin flavored. One familiar fall flavor we don’t see a lot of is candy corn. There has been candy corn soda and last year there was candy corn M&M’s, but the number of candy corn-flavored products is dwarfed by the number of pumpkin products. This year, Nabisco is showing candy corn some love by putting out a Limited Edition Candy Corn Oreo exclusively at Target.

Why are the number of candy corn-flavored products so low? Well, maybe because candy corn is the worst Halloween candy ever! I’m sorry. I have too many horrible childhood memories of seeing waxy candy corn being dumped into my jack o’ lantern-shaped Trick or Treat pail by cheap ass neighbors.

If you tried these limited edition Oreo cookies, let us know what you think of them in the comments below.

KettleRedChiliFront

To celebrate their 30th birthday, Kettle Brand brought back four of their retired flavors for a limited time — Red Chili, Jalapeño Jack, Salsa with Mesquite, and Cheddar Beer. The only flavor I tried before it was retired was Cheddar Beer, and now my taste buds get to relive them again. (Found at the Kingsbury Whole Foods in Chicago. Thanks for the photo, Ben!)

Pillsbury Chocolate Strawberry Toaster Strudel

Maybe it’s just me, but doesn’t the Toaster Strudel on the box look like it’s a sacrifice for some ancient demonic religion. The strawberry filling looks like blood and the symbol drawn in chocolate frosting looks not only like a rocket going into space, but also a one-eyed demon with three hairs on its head. Or maybe I’ve seen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom too many times. (Thanks for the photo, Adam!)

Lay's Stax

There’s also a Lay’s Stax All-American Cheeseburger. So if happen to get your hands on all three flavors, you can enjoy a complete Hooters meal in potato crisp form. (Thanks for the photo, Adam!)

Whole Grain Corn Dogs

Whole grain is taking over the whole grocery store. It’s making it easy to get our daily fill of whole grain from junk food. If only junk food companies could figure out a way to sneak vegetables into our food. (Thanks for the photo, Adam!)

Larry the Cable Guy isn’t the only Blue Collar comic with a line of chips. Jeff Foxworthy also has one. But I’m disappointed Bill Engvall’s Dill Pickalls and Ron White Scotch don’t exist. (Found in the Georgetown, Texas area. Thanks for the photo, Brian!)

NEWS: Arizona Beverages Honors a New York Yankee With A Beverage That Probably Won’t Sell Well in Boston

The Mighty Joe

I know three things about Joe DiMaggio. He was a New York Yankee, he had a 56-game hitting streak, and was once married to Marilyn Monroe. And that’s without looking at his Wikipedia page.

Recently, I learned something new about Mr. DiMaggio. He’ll soon have a canned coffee beverage called Joltin’ Joe from Arizona Beverages, makers of Arnold Palmer’s half & half and Jack Nicklaus’ Golden Bear lemonade.

Joltin’ Joe is a carbonated, all-natural beverage made with espresso coffee. An 8-ounce serving has 80 milligrams of caffeine and 50 calories. It’s sweetened using RebA – a natural sweetener derived from the stevia leaf. Joltin’ Joe will be available in 16-ounce cans that highlight his 56-game hitting streak.

The espresso drink will be available in New York metro area in mid-September and will continue to roll out nationally throughout the year.

I’m disappointed these weren’t called Sun Chips Mix. What can I say? I’m a sucker for names that rhyme (I’m also a fan alliteration). I find it a little unusual these Sun Snacks Mix-Ups come in sweet flavors since Sun Chips are mostly savory flavors. Although, they did make a mean Cinnamon Sun Chips a few years ago. Thanks for the photo, Adam!

Ball Park is known for their franks, and now they have a line of frozen products that don’t involve many franks. Frankly, I find that awfully fascinating. (See, I told you I’m a fan of alliteration.) They take minutes to prepare, so if you’re watching a baseball game at home, you’ll have something to do that will help prevent you falling asleep while listening to television baseball announcer banter. Thanks for the photos, Adam!

Twenty-five percent of my daily value of fiber? Is that the best you can do, Kellogg’s? Most Fiber One snack bars provide 35 percent. I need more fiber to help my digestive Tiber. But not too much fiber because if there’s too much, these bars might also be known as Farty Delights.

Thanks to baking reality shows, I know what fondant is. Thanks to Betty Crocker, I can pretend to have my own baking reality show and have fondant problems.

Oh, Guy Fieri. I thought your over bleached spiky hair was the most shocking thing about you. Well, it turns out I was wrong.
