NEWS: Keep Cool In Japan This Summer With Salty Watermelon Pepsi

Square Water Melon

Pepsi Japan is releasing a salty watermelon flavor this summer. To some of you this might seem odd, but this upcoming soda is probably the tamest thing the Japanese people have ever done to a watermelon.

For decades, Japanese farmers have made square watermelons and today they sell for around $150-$200 US. They also produce black watermelons, which are pricier than the square ones.

The Salty Watermelon Pepsi will be available in Japan on July 24 and will come in a 490 ml bottle. If you don’t live in Japan, which I believe is the case for 99.8 percent of all TIB readers, you can probably get your hands on some online via J-List, NapaJapan, or eBay.

SPOTTED ON SHELVES – 5/25/2012

Here are some new products found on store shelves by us and your fellow readers. We may or may not review them, but we’d like to let you know what new items are popping up. We’ll also occasionally throw in an unusual product.

Good Humor Mounds Bar

Last year, Good Humor released Reese’s Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cups. This year, they’ve expanded their candy bar inspired line with Mounds and York Ice Cream Bars. Mounds Ice Cream Bars are coconut light ice cream with real coconut dipped in a dark chocolate flavored coating, while York Ice Cream Bars are made up of peppermint light ice cream dipped in dark chocolate flavored coating.

New IHOP products

Yay! More IHOP At Home frozen breakfasts based on nothing from IHOP’s restaurant menu. About this time last year the first IHOP At Home products hit the shelves. Come on, Denny’s, it’s been a year! Frozen Grand Slams FTW!

Hostess Apple Cinnamon Donettes

Hostess Soft-Baked Cookies

Is it just me or do those new Apple Cinnamon Donettes have a weird color to them? They look like rocks in a bag. Well, thank goodness the new Hostess Soft Baked Cookies look like cookies. I could’ve sworn Hostess sold cookies in the past or maybe it’s all the white Twinkies cream I’ve consumed that’s clouding my memory. Read a Hostess Soft Baked Cookies review here.

DiGiorno Italian-Style Favorites

Two-thirds of the DiGiorno Italian-Style Favorites pizza flavors — Chicken Parmesan and Meatball Marinara — sound like they’re pizzas topped with Italian dishes. They also sound like Subway sandwiches. Oh wait…They are Subway sandwiches. There’s also a Meat Trio variety made up of sausage, pepperoni, and salami. The pizza’s crust has a touch of olive oil and herbs, but I would’ve preferred a crust stuffed with hot dogs.

Herr Hot Dog Chips

Speaking of hot dogs (segue), here’s a picture of Herr’s artificially flavored hot dog potato chips. I wonder if they taste similar to a Costco hot dog topped with ketchup, mustard, and the contents of a crushed snack-szied bag of Ruffles.

NEWS: Kellogg’s Releases S’more Limited Edition Eggo Seasons Waffles

Kellogg's Eggo Seasons S'mores Waffles

I’ve never yearned for a box of frozen waffles. I just put them in my cart and say, “Meh. It’s part of a complete breakfast.”

But these Kellogg’s Limited Edition Eggo Seasons S’mores waffles have got me craving for some frozen waffles I have to stick in a toaster for about 4-5 minutes. But it’s okay I have to wait, because you know what they say, “The older the berry the sweeter the juice.” Wait, I don’t think that applies with frozen waffles. Anyhoo, each waffle has small bits of graham, marshmallow, and chocolate.

Kellogg’s Limited Edition Eggo Seasons S’mores is the second product from the Eggo Seasons line. The first was a pumpkin spice flavored waffle, which was released last fall. Like the pumpkin spice version, the Limited Edition Eggo Seasons S’mores Waffles are a Target exclusive.

If you’ve tried them, let us know what you think of them in the comments.

NEWS: Apple Cinnamon Chex Cereal To Squeeze Itself Into Cereal Aisles Next Month

Apple Cinnamon Chex on shelf

Do you stand in the cereal aisle and think to yourself, “Damn. Cereal be multiplying like rabbits.”

You don’t?

Well, I do. And soon there will be more cereals to choose from. Next month, the Big G will be releasing Apple Cinnamon Chex Cereal and Fiber One Nutty Clusters & Almonds. Impulsive Buy contributor Adam learned about the upcoming cereals from the back of a Honey Nut Cheerios box.

The Apple Cinnamon Chex Cereal consists of sweetened whole grain rice cereal sprinkled with real apple and cinnamon. It’s made using no artificial flavors or colors and is gluten free. The cereal will be the fourth flavored Chex cereal variety, joining Honey Nut, Chocolate, and Cinnamon. As for the Fiber One Nutty Clusters & Almonds, it’s made up of lightly sweetened whole grain flakes with sliced almonds and almond clusters.

DiGiorno Pizza & Cinnamon Sticks

DiGiorno has combined their pizza with breadsticks, chicken wyngz, and cookies, so, mathematically, cinnamon sticks had to happen. This product got me thinking about how DiGiorno should make a cinnamon roll pizza. Instead of tomato sauce, it would have a layer of cinnamon, and the cheese would be replaced with white icing. Mmm…diabedelicious.

Cape Cod Chef's Recipe

Cape Cod Waffle Cut

Cape Cod Whole Grain

Kettle cooked potato chip maker and diet breaker Cape Cod has a bunch of new chips. First, there’s the Chef’s Recipes potato chip line, which was inspired by a real chef named Weldon Fizell who runs the Regatta Restaurant in Cotuit, MA. It comes in two flavors: Feta & Rosemary and Roasted Garlic & Red Pepper. Next, there’s the Kettle Cooked Waffle Cut Chips, which is available in Sea Salt and Seasoned Pepper. Finally, Cape Cod has a non potato chip line, their Kettle Style Whole Grain Chips. They’re made with whole wheat, whole yellow corn, and whole oats. The line of healthier chips has three flavors: Toasted Grains, Three Cheese, and Italian Herb & Cheese. Dave’s Cupboard reviewed the Chef’s Recipe and Waffle Cut varieties. Utz Sweet Potato Rice Crisps

Utz now offers Sweet Potato Rice Crisps. I know what you’re thinking. Too bad these weren’t wrapped in dried ramen noodles because Noodle Sweet Potato Rice Crisps would’ve contained the names of three types of starches. Sweet Potato follows the original Rice Crisps flavors — Sea Salt, Sweet Chili, and Salsa Fresca. Photo via Adam.

Jingos

Why isn’t it Jingoes!? Ugh. See what you made me do Pepperidge Farm. You made me put a question mark after an exclamation point. According to the Pepperidge Farm website, these crunchy crackers are baked and seasoned twice for “an explosive taste every time.” Jingos are available in three “explosive” flavors: Lime & Sweet Chili, Parmesan Garlic, and Fiesta Cheddar. Now that I know about Jingos!, I want to play Jenga with Jango Fett while eating Jingos! in a Jonga.

Klondike Peanut Butter Choco Taco

We end this Spotted on Shelves post with the new Peanut Butter Choco Taco, which is made up of peanut butter light ice cream and peanut buttery swirls wrapped in a sugar taco cone that’s line with a chocolatey coating, all of which is topped with a milk chocolatey shell and peanuts. If it weren’t for Choco Tacos, Taco Bell’s tacos would be the least Mexican tacos.
