SPOTTED ON SHELVES – 5/22/2012

Here are some new products found on store shelves by us and your fellow readers. We may or may not review them, but we’d like to let you know what new items are popping up. We’ll also occasionally throw in an unusual product.

DiGiorno Pizza & Cinnamon Sticks

DiGiorno has combined their pizza with breadsticks, chicken wyngz, and cookies, so, mathematically, cinnamon sticks had to happen. This product got me thinking about how DiGiorno should make a cinnamon roll pizza. Instead of tomato sauce, it would have a layer of cinnamon, and the cheese would be replaced with white icing. Mmm…diabedelicious.

Cape Cod Chef's Recipe

Cape Cod Waffle Cut

Cape Cod Whole Grain

Kettle cooked potato chip maker and diet breaker Cape Cod has a bunch of new chips. First, there’s the Chef’s Recipes potato chip line, which was inspired by a real chef named Weldon Fizell who runs the Regatta Restaurant in Cotuit, MA. It comes in two flavors: Feta & Rosemary and Roasted Garlic & Red Pepper. Next, there’s the Kettle Cooked Waffle Cut Chips, which is available in Sea Salt and Seasoned Pepper. Finally, Cape Cod has a non potato chip line, their Kettle Style Whole Grain Chips. They’re made with whole wheat, whole yellow corn, and whole oats. The line of healthier chips has three flavors: Toasted Grains, Three Cheese, and Italian Herb & Cheese. Dave’s Cupboard reviewed the Chef’s Recipe and Waffle Cut varieties. Utz Sweet Potato Rice Crisps

Utz now offers Sweet Potato Rice Crisps. I know what you’re thinking. Too bad these weren’t wrapped in dried ramen noodles because Noodle Sweet Potato Rice Crisps would’ve contained the names of three types of starches. Sweet Potato follows the original Rice Crisps flavors — Sea Salt, Sweet Chili, and Salsa Fresca. Photo via Adam.

Jingos

Why isn’t it Jingoes!? Ugh. See what you made me do Pepperidge Farm. You made me put a question mark after an exclamation point. According to the Pepperidge Farm website, these crunchy crackers are baked and seasoned twice for “an explosive taste every time.” Jingos are available in three “explosive” flavors: Lime & Sweet Chili, Parmesan Garlic, and Fiesta Cheddar. Now that I know about Jingos!, I want to play Jenga with Jango Fett while eating Jingos! in a Jonga.

Klondike Peanut Butter Choco Taco

We end this Spotted on Shelves post with the new Peanut Butter Choco Taco, which is made up of peanut butter light ice cream and peanut buttery swirls wrapped in a sugar taco cone that’s line with a chocolatey coating, all of which is topped with a milk chocolatey shell and peanuts. If it weren’t for Choco Tacos, Taco Bell’s tacos would be the least Mexican tacos.

NEWS: Get Your Toaster’s Heating Elements Ready For Eggo Granola Chocolate Chip and Thick & Fluffy Mixed Berry Waffles

The Pirate Toaster

Remember when we posted this news about Eggo releasing a toaster oven-filling amount of new Eggo varieties? With those five varieties, we thought Kellogg’s was done for the year, but the toaster heating elements in the test kitchens at Kellogg’s continue to work because there are three new Eggo flavors — Eggo Thick & Fluffy Mixed Berry Waffles, Eggo Granola Chocolate Chip Waffles, and Eggo Granola Mixed Berry Waffles.

Mixed berry follows the original and cinnamon brown sugar Thick & Fluffy waffles, which were released in late 2009. Eggo Thick & Fluffy Mixed Berry contains mixed berry bits, which includes strawberries and blueberries. The waffle is also flavored with kiwi, strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry fruit concentrates. As for Eggo Granola Chocolate Chip Waffles, they’re stuffed with rolled oats, granola pieces and semi sweet chocolate. Between the two new flavors, Eggo Granola Chocolate Chip sounds more interesting. I wonder if the granola will bring a crunchy texture to the waffles.

Two Eggo Granola Waffles Chocolate Chip have 200 calories, 8 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams of trans fat, 350 milligrams of sodium, 29 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 5 grams of sugar, and 4 grams of protein. One Eggo Thick & Fluffy Mixed Berry Waffle has 160 calories, 6 grams of fat, 1.5 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams of trans fat, 260 milligrams of sodium, 23 grams of carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of fiber, 7 grams of sugar, and 3 grams of protein. Both products are fortified with vitamins and minerals.

SPOTTED ON SHELVES – 5/16/2012

Here are some new products found on store shelves by us and your fellow readers. We may or may not review them, but we’d like to let you know what new items are popping up. We’ll also occasionally throw in an unusual product.

Blue Bunny Naturally Frozen Yogurt

Blue Bunny’s new line of Naturally Frozen Yogurt isn’t Greek, like the frozen yogurt from a particular Vermont company, but it’s 100 percent natural. The photo above only shows two flavors, Bordeaux Cherry Chocolate (Bordeaux cherry frozen yogurt mixed with dark cherry pieces and dark chocolate chunks) and Caramel Praline Crunch (butter pecan frozen yogurt with praline pecan pieces swirled with a salty caramel ribbon), but there’s also Vanilla Bean and Chocolate Vanilla Swirl. Thanks to Impulsive Buy reader greendaychick for the photo.

Orville Redenbacher's Ready-to-Eat Popcorn

Can’t wait the 2.5-3 minutes to pop a bag of microwaveable popcorn? Well then, Orville Redenbacher’s now has something to satisfy your impatient soul — ready-to-eat popcorn. The bagged popcorn comes in four flavors: Sharp White Cheddar, Classic Kettle Korn, Farmhouse Cheddar, and Signature BBQ. Thanks to TIB reviewer Adam for the picture…and the next two pictures.

M&M's Sweet & Salty Snack Mix

When I’m bored, I make couch mixes, which are like trail mixes, except they’re for people who don’t like to hike. They’re always made with M&M’s and I add whatever snacks are available around the kitchen, like cookies, nuts, and potato chips. The folks at Mars have started making their own snack mixes with M&M’s. They come in three varieties: the Milk Chocolate Snack Mix includes milk chocolate M&M’s, mini chocolate chip cookies, peanuts, and mini pretzels; the Dark Chocolate Snack Mix has dark chocolate M&M’s, raisins, almonds, and mini pretzels; and the Peanut Snack Mix is made up of Peanut M&M’s, mini shortbread cookies, almonds, and mini pretzels.

Goldfish Graham Cookies & Cream

I remember when Goldfish crackers came in two flavors, original and cheddar. I. Am. Old. This latest edition to the Goldfish Graham line combines chocolate grahams, vanilla grahams, and a sprinkling of cream. Now that I think about it, this would make a wonderful couch mix addition.

Ghost Peppe Salsa

Impulsive Buy reader Ben sent us this photo of Mrs. Renfro’s Ghost Pepper Salsa. Ghost chili peppers, which are also known as Bhut Jolokia chili peppers, are the world’s hottest chili peppers, and it’s frickin’ awesome that someone made a salsa using them. Mrs. Renfro’s Ghost Pepper Salsa isn’t a new product (it’s been around since 2010), but it’s new to me and it’s something I’d like to burn my digestive system with. Here’s a review at the Burn Blog.

SPOTTED ON SHELVES – 5/10/2012

New products are released all the time and here are some we found on our most recent shopping trips. We may or may not review them, but we’d like to let you know what new items are popping up on store shelves.

When I first saw these, I thought they were half baked potatoes in a bag, but these Ore-Ida Grillers are thick potato slices you can either prepare on a grill or in an oven. But Ore-Ida probably wants you to heat them up on a grill, since they didn’t call them Ore-Ida Oveners. I don’t know if the grill marks on the potato come pre-marked. It would be very weird if they did. I saw only two varieties at my local Safeway — Seasoned Thick Cut Potatoes and Golden Thick Cut Potatoes.

The directions for the new Quaker Real Medleys Oatmeal are pretty much the same as a Cup Noodles. You can either pour hot water into them or pour unheated water and stick them into the microwave. The instant oatmeal comes in four fruity and/or nutty flavors: Apple Walnut, Cherry Pistachio, Peach Almond, and Summer Berry. Each contains 290 calories.

IMG_1276

Lipton Tea & Honey comes in six flavors: Black Currant Raspberry Iced Black Tea, Lemon Iced Black Tea, Peach Apricot Iced Black Tea, Mango Pineapple Iced Green Tea, Blackberry Pomegranate Iced Green Ta, and Strawberry Acai Decaf Iced Green Tea. The black tea varieties have 40 milligrams of caffeine per 16 ounce serving, while the green tea flavors, except for the decaf Strawberry Acai, have 20 milligrams. But all of them have 60 milligrams of flavonoids.

If Greece earned royalties for every Greek yogurt product sold, perhaps they wouldn’t be in the financial mess they’re in. Also, if that was the case, Yoplait would be paying Greece a load of money that’s thicker than Greek yogurt. Yoplait offers regular Greek yogurts, Greek yogurt parfaits, and these Greek yogurt smoothies. I’m surprised there isn’t a Yoplait Greek Go-Gurt for kids.

IMG_1297

We wrote about the new limited edition Hot Pockets varieties the other day, but Lean Pockets also has a couple of new Pretzel Bread varieties — Mesquite BBQ Recipe Chicken and Spinach and 3 Cheese. Hmm…Mesquite BBQ doesn’t sound very lean. Also, what’s with the “recipe” in its name. It makes me suspicious. Random Dude Eats Random Food has a review.

Totino's Pizza Chips

This photo comes from reader Troy Kibodeaux via our Facebook page. I read about these a few months ago on a snack forum. After doing some research, it appears pepperoni is the only flavor. As someone who enjoys Totino’s Party Pizzas, except the trans fat in them, I’m curious about these. I’m also weirded out by them because if anyone’s goal is to recreate the flavor of a frozen pizza, then their goal is a bit low.

NEWS: Choosy Moms Choose Jif, But Will They Choose Jif Chocolate Hazelnut Spread Over Nutella

2012-05-24 04.08.04

Update: Click here to read our Jif Hazelnut Spreads (Chocolate and Mocha Cappuccino) review

To be honest, before today, I didn’t know much about hazelnut spreads, except for the world famous Nutella.

If you were to have asked me two days ago to name another hazelnut spread brand and recite all 50 states and their capitals or else be pantsed in the middle of a busy public area, I would’ve had my jeans around my ankles. But if the same thing happened today, lots of people would still see my black Hanes boxer briefs, but I would be able to name another hazelnut spread brand because Jif recently introduced a line of hazelnut spreads.

Jif Hazelnut Spread comes in two flavors: Chocolate and Mocha Cappuccino.

If you’re wondering how they compare with Nutella, read through the next two paragraphs filled with commas.

The Jif Hazelnut Spreads are made using sugar, vegetable oils (rapeseed and palm), hazelnuts, cocoa processed with alkali, skim milk, whey powder, contains 2% or less of: butter oil (milk), sunflower lecithin, and natural flavors. While Nutella is made with sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, reduced minerals whey (milk), lecithin as emulsifier (soy), vanillin: an artificial flavor.

Two tablespoons of the product from Jif has 230 calories, 14 grams of fat, 3.5 grams of saturated fat, less than 5 milligrams of cholesterol, 40 milligrams of sodium, 22 grams of carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of fiber, 21 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of protein. And, Nutella has 200 calories, 11 grams of fat, 3.5 grams of saturated fat, 0 milligrams of cholesterol, 15 milligrams of sodium, 22 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 21 grams of sugar, and 3 grams of protein.

If you’ve tried either Jif Hazelnut Spread, let us know what you think of them in the comments.
