REVIEW: Dunkin’ Avocado Toast

Dunkin Avocado Toast Full

What is Dunkin’s Avocado Toast?

Better late than never, Dunkin’ tries to court millennials with the ever popular avocado toast. Dunkin’s version has a piece of toasted sourdough bread as the base, topped with avocado spread (made with four ingredients: avocado, sea salt, black pepper, and lemon juice), and finished with a hearty sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, onion, and garlic).

How is it?

Dunkin Avocado Toast Toasted

Avocado toast is a tricky thing to nail. Yes, it seems simple, but it can go bad very quickly. Dunkin’s iteration sits in that “firm middle of the road” category. It isn’t good, nor is it bad. It’s just okay. The sourdough provides a good base for the item. Thoroughly toasted, it holds up well to the spread and keeps its structural integrity.

Dunkin Avocado Toast Split

The avocado spread is certainly better than most spreads I’ve had, but the lemon flavor will come on strong every few bites. It’s not necessarily unpleasant, but it’s not a flavor I associate with avocado toast. Of course, I understand the necessity of lemon to help the avocado stay stable and not turn brown.

The everything bagel seasoning does most of the heavy lifting flavor-wise. The strong flavors of the garlic and onion bits make the lemon less pungent. I can say with pretty strong confidence that the item would be rated much lower without the seasoning.

Dunkin Avocado Toast Cut

The item was relatively light for a breakfast item on its own. After the fact, I cursed myself for not getting some of Dunkin’s snacking bacon. I think that might make it a little more substantial, and I’d be curious how the bacon worked with the spread.

You can also buy the spread separately to add to other Dunkin’ items if you so want.

Conclusion:

Dunkin’s Avocado Toast is a solid try at a popular item. It’s not going to wow you if you’re looking for the flavor of pure avocado, but works well as a very light breakfast/snack. It’s a nice change from the more traditional breakfast offerings at Dunkin’ that can sometimes be heavy on the stomach.

REVIEW: Dunkin’ Chocolate Stout Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam

Dunkin Chocolate Stout Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam Full

What is Dunkin’s Chocolate Stout Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam?

Ever wanted your cold brew to taste more like a cold brewski? Well, Dunkin’s got you covered.

How is it?

I drink more stouts than I should admit.

Seriously, here’s a list of stouts I’ve had since Christmas – Coffee, Cacao, Russian Imperial, Chai, “Rainbow Cookie,” Peanut Butter, “Almond Joy,” S’mores, Coconut, Peppermint, Banana, Maple Cinnamon, Cookies n’ Cream, and one with hot peppers. Yup, I’m one of those annoying craft beer guys.

Does that make me an authority on stouts? Yes. It absolutely does. I felt it was my duty to review Dunkin’s new Chocolate Stout Cold Brew for you good folks.

Dunkin Chocolate Stout Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam Top

It actually started out looking like a nitro stout, with syrup streaks cascading down the side of the cup. I tried the cold foam before mixing it in, and it tasted like a very light typical cream topping with a hint of saltiness. Weird start.

The first full sip tasted like some prankster bartender put ice in a chocolate stout and let the cubes melt before serving. It was like a watered-down ghost of a chocolate stout.

The stout-flavored syrup insisted on clinging to the bottom, so it did get more and more stouty as I sipped on but never really came close to the flavor I was hoping for.

Dunkin Chocolate Stout Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam Bottle

I wasn’t expecting it to be spot on, as “stout” is an acquired taste, but it wasn’t malty or even very roasty, which caught me off-guard because it’s coffee, after all.

The chocolate flavor wasn’t bursting either. I kept tasting a Fudgesicle, but not even a good one, like one of those reduced-fat Fudgsicles.

Anything else you need to know?

The cold brew itself got lost. It definitely didn’t taste like a chocolate coffee stout to me. The coffee may have been the least discernible flavor. I love a sweet cold brew, but I still wanna taste the coffee. This was neither too sweet nor too coffee forward. It landed in a watery limbo.

Conclusion:

If you want chocolate, just get a pump of mocha. If you wanna pretend you’re drinking booze at Dunkin’, just get a shot of Irish crème flavor instead.

I can appreciate the effort, but this is not replacing my usual Dunkin order, or furthering my stout obsession.

REVIEW: Dunkin’ Blueberry Iced Matcha Latte

Dunkin Blueberry Iced Matcha Latte Cup

What the Dunkin’ Blueberry Iced Matcha Latte?

It combines Dunkin’s Iced Matcha Latte with pumps of its blueberry flavor shots. Pimple dimple simple.

How is it?

I enjoy Dunkin’s Iced Matcha Latte, which I reviewed when it debuted. And, to be honest, I thought adding some blueberry flavor wouldn’t make that much of a difference. But holy moly, while it just lingers in the background, the fruitiness totally enhances the sweet matcha. The blueberry flavor makes this taste as if it has a blueberry muffin essence.

Dunkin Blueberry Iced Matcha Latte Syrup

It’s a simple addition, but the flavor shots make an already tasty drink even better. If you love the original, then definitely give this flavored version a try.

Although, now that I think about it, maybe my mind is blown a little because all the matcha lattes I’ve ever had have been just matcha with no other flavor. So perhaps the slight change is impressing me more than it should. Still, this is a mighty tasty beverage.

Anything else you need to know?

After drinking this, I wondered if there has ever been a Blueberry Matcha Kit Kat in Japan. I did a lazy Google search and found nothing. Maybe it’s time to get on that, Nestle Japan. Or if you’re feel courageous, Hershey’s, perhaps you should make it here.

Also, this drink makes me want to bake some blueberry matcha muffins. Although, I’m not very good at baking, which was proven when I did not add eggs to brownie batter. So maybe I’ll find a local bakery that does make them.

Of course, since it’s been possible to customize the matcha latte since it was introduced, I could’ve been getting this drink all this time. Speaking of customization, I got mine with whole milk, but you can get it with any dairy or non-dairy milk Dunkin’ offers.

Conclusion:

If you’re not into super sugary matcha drinks and prefer the green tea’s bitterness, then this is not for you. As for myself, I think I may get all future Dunkin’ Iced Matcha Lattes this way.

REVIEW: Dunkin’ Midnight Coffee

Dunkin Midnight Coffee Cup

What is Dunkin’ Midnight Coffee?

In accordance with the present times, Dunkin’ has decided to get a little dark – darker than it’s ever gone before, in fact, with the release of the new Midnight Coffee.

How is it?

I almost always opt for the dark roast when I order my cold brews on the app, but that option seemed to disappear in the past month or so. Thankfully Dunkin’ has decided to go even darker with its new Midnight blend.

I’m just gonna say it – Dunkin’s regular base coffee stinks.

But it is a gateway to a better beverage. If you love it, more power to ya, but I can’t fathom drinking it black. It’s just not that good. 4 out of 10.

Dunkin Midnight Coffee Comparison

To reinforce my opinion, I tried a hot Midnight coffee against Dunkin’s regular roast, and it was (mid)night and day. Of all the crazy sugar bombs Dunkin’ drops monthly, this might be the most important menu addition in years.

Ok, I’m being dramatic. But for a dark roast fan like myself, this is big.

Dunkin Midnight Coffee Mug

Midnight is a rich, darker blend that leans more towards espresso with big notes of bitter dark chocolate.

I found the taste to be softer and dryer than the standard, with a much more pleasant aftertaste. It made the regular coffee sour in comparison.

Anything else you need to know?

After taking a few sips of the straight black coffees, I added oat milk, which is the G.O.A.T. milk, not be confused with goat milk, which is a goat’s milk.

Again, Midnight was considerably better. The oat milk’s creaminess enhanced the dark chocolate notes slightly and left a chocolate-covered espresso bean flavor in its wake.

Conclusion:

Dunkin Midnight Coffee Mug

Look, I’ll probably never order a hot black Midnight coffee again if I’m honest, but that doesn’t change the fact that Dunkin’ finally has a coffee I would drink black. It’s not hard to mask the flavor of Dunkin’s base roast, but I’m still thrilled it’s added a new starting point to my coffee order.

Dunkin’ better expand Midnight into the iced side of the menu because I see no reason to ever go back. If you’re a dark roast coffee drinker, this is definitely for you.

REVIEW: Dunkin’ Sugarplum Iced Macchiato

Dunkin Sugarplum Macchiato Cup

What is Dunkin’s Sugarplum Iced Macchiato

One of the most flavorful coffee concoctions Dunkin’ has ever released, and certainly its most purple!

How is it?

I love it, but I have to admit, I didn’t know what a sugarplum was, and I still kinda don’t?

Are they even a real thing, or did that dude who wrote “Twas the Night Before Christmas” make them up? Is it just a candied plum? Is “sugarplum” just a cute blanket word for “sweets,” kinda like how the British use “pudding” to describe everything from actual pudding to cake to, like, toothpaste?

Every time I hear the word, I think of a hard-boiled noir detective being a jerk to some poor dame. “Hows about grabbin’ me a cuppa joe, sugarplums?”

Perhaps that bit of poorly aged dialogue somehow inspired this delicious coffee drink?

I decided to skip any and all research in an attempt to figure out what sugarplum actually tastes like, and I settled on “berry bomb.”

Dunkin Sugarplum Macchiato Berry Closeup

I may have been influenced by the whimsical color of the drink itself (seriously, how cool looking is that?). But on any given sip, I tasted just about every “dark fruit” from grape to blueberry to its namesake, plum. I’d describe it as vaguely “Fruity Pebbles After-milk.”

If Nestle Quik released an all-encompassing “Berry Milk” flavor, it would probably taste like the lower level of this drink, and I can’t compliment Dunkin’ enough.

Anything else you need to know?

As you can see from the oil and vinegar-style separation, the top layer is espresso, and it packs a wallop. I was able to take sips of each layer individually just by moving the straw. That’s some of the strongest coffee Dunkin’ has to offer.

After sampling each layer a few times, I mixed it up, and while the milky sugarplum layer lost a lot of its punch, it still made for a really nice iced macchiato. Then again, I’m the type of freak who likes to order blueberry flavor shots in my coffee.

Conclusion:

I doubled back to Dunkin’s press release, which described sugarplum as “bright berry flavors of blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, and plum,” so I was in the ballpark. I love that a fruit like plum gets to shine a bit for once, and I think this was a creative new spin on holiday gimmicks. I can see this becoming a yearly thing, and I fully expect more brands to get on the Sugarplum Express. We all know imitation is the sincerest form of fattery… flattery.
