REVIEW: Reese’s Thins Peanut Butter Cups

Reese s Thins Peanut Butter Cups

What are Reese’s Thins?

New Reese’s Thins are not Hershey’s attempt at a “diet” food.

I was actually dumb enough to think that may have been the case for a second. A smarter person would have realized that these are simply thinner peanut butter cups.

How are they?

Reese s Thins Peanut Butter Cups Top

I’d find it a bit disingenuous to whine about any Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. They’re arguably the single greatest piece of candy on Earth, so you’d probably roll your eyes if I went on a long diatribe about how baffled I am by Reese’s Thins, right?

Well, just let me rant a little.

These shouldn’t exist.

Ok, that’s a tad dramatic, they’re still tasty enough, but Reese’s Thins are a just Cliff’s Notes of Reese’s Cups.

Reese s Thins Peanut Butter Cups Center

The ratio is off. Instead of that familiar gritty fluff of peanut butter, you just get a tiny layer sandwiched between overpowering chocolate. I don’t want chocolate to be the star of a Reese’s cup. Who eats Reese’s Cup and thinks, “I wish there was more chocolate?!”

The thinness makes these borderline crispy. I’d equate the texture to a frozen version of regular Cups.

Reese s Thins Peanut Butter Cups Wrappers

It’s not all boring. I couldn’t help but think these would actually be perfect in s’mores. I also appreciate the individual wrappers. They don’t have that oily wax paper dressing like regular Cups. Every Thin I ate was clean with no chunks coming off on the paper.

Conclusion:

You wouldn’t want a hamburger patty sliced like cold cuts would you? That’s my weird, probably nonsensical parallel here.

Why buy a bag of flat candy bars with a bit of peanut butter inside when you can get actual Reese’s Cups? Easter’s coming up, get a bag of those little foil wrapped Reese’s Cups if you want LESS Reese’s Cup –- at least they have the right peanut butter to chocolate ratio.

QUICK REVIEW: Hershey’s Milk Chocolate & Reese’s Pieces Bar

Hershey s Milk Chocolate Reese s Pieces Bar

What is the Hershey’s Milk Chocolate & Reese’s Pieces Bar?

The love child of a Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar and Reese’s Pieces, or as the Hershey’s marketing folks put it “the ultimate celebration of the top two iconic chocolate franchises that will melt your heart to pieces for a once-in-a-lifetime epic treat.”

How is it?

Hershey s Milk Chocolate Reese s Pieces Bar 2

Based on the aforementioned tagline, I was fully prepared for a life-changing, out-of-body experience that I would eventually tell my grandchildren about. Sadly, the little yet-to-be-born rascals will instead have to listen to other stories, like the time I saw The Rock at the airport. But despite not quite living up to the WWE-style marketing hype, this is a tasty treat.

Hershey s Milk Chocolate Reese s Pieces Bar 3

The Reese’s Pieces stand out nicely from the milk chocolate and provide a solid crunch that is obviously absent from a plain chocolate bar. The candy also adds a light peanut butter flavor that complements the creamy chocolate perfectly without making you think you are just eating a flattened peanut butter cup.

Is there anything else you need to know?

Hershey s Milk Chocolate Reese s Pieces Bar 4

If the photos don’t give it away, the Reese’s Pieces are actually minis. There is also a king size version of this, but I didn’t have any luck finding it. If that one has a thicker bar with full-size Pieces, it might offer a bit more crunchiness. Also, whoever designed the wrapper apparently doesn’t believe in equality in the candy world, because the Hershey’s part covers much more than half.

Conclusion:

At first glance, I figured this wouldn’t be much different than just chucking some Reese’s Pieces in my mouth along with a bite of a Hershey’s bar, but having the Pieces embedded in the chocolate takes this to the next level. It might not be an epic candy creation — like Reese’s Pieces were — but it’s a nice change of pace from the standard chocolate bar.

REVIEW: Reese’s Puffs Treats (2018)

Reese's Puffs Treats 2018

The reborn Reese’s Puffs Treats have cocoa and real Reese’s Peanut Butter. But don’t automatically think this is going to taste anything like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.

As a wise man once said, “Don’t go looking to obtain something that can be easily obtained without looking.” Okay, I pulled that line out of the air, and I hope I’m not plagiarizing some minor Greek thinker. But what I’m trying to say philosophically is, why expect something to taste like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup when you can easily get that with the actual candy?

With that said, I’m someone who thinks Reese’s Peanut Butter doesn’t taste like the gritty stuff inside the famous candy. So I’m not expecting this cereal bar to be anything like the iconic candy. I’m also one of those people who, despite running a junk food blog for almost 15 years, did not try the original Reese’s Puffs Treats that debuted in 2014.

Reese's Puffs Treats 2018 2

Reese's Puffs Treats 2018 3

As I mentioned at the beginning of the review, this new version has real Reese’s Peanut Butter, but it’s not just in the stuff drizzled on top and dipped on the bottom. It’s also in the cereal, and there are Reese’s Peanut Butter-flavored chips. It’s a triple threat treat. Okay, say that five times really fast.

Triple threat treat. Triple tret treat. Tripper tret treet. Turple threat treat. Thurple thrat treat.

All that Reese’s Peanut Butter goodness amounts to a cereal bar that makes me say, “Oh, my goodness.”

If you enjoy Reese’s Puffs Cereal, you will adore this. It’s like eating an enhanced bowl of the cereal. The combination of peanut buttery coating, chips, and cereal create a nutty kick that makes it taste as if the I was eating a bowl of Reese’s Puffs with the leftover milk from a bowl of Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch.

Yes, with all that nuttiness, the cocoa takes a backseat. I’m not talking a car backseat. I’m talking school bus backseat. It’s hardly noticeable, but I hardly care because these are so good that my lack of willpower caused me to inhaled three of them within two hours of purchase.

As for its texture, it’s what you’d expect from a prepackaged mass-produced bar made with ingredients that have enough moisture to soften the usually crunchy texture of the cereal slightly. It’s not like chomping on dry cereal, but it’s also not super soft.

Overall, Reese’s Puffs Treats, the reboot, is a tasty snack that’ll satisfy fans of the cereal.

REVIEW: Pillsbury Reese’s Peanut Butter Cookies

Pillsbury Reese's Peanut Butter Cookies

Reese’s and Pillsbury have teamed up to offer a peanut butter cookie dough made with Reese’s Peanut Butter. No mixing. No bowls. Just break apart the block of dough, place the pieces on a cookie sheet, bake, and then think of all the time you’re saving by not making cookies from scratch and having to deal with all the cleaning after. It’ll give you so much time that you have the time to think that.

The name Reese’s brings excitement when printed on a package. Go post a photo of something with Reese’s on Instagram or Facebook, and I’m sure it’ll be one of your most liked photos. But this cookie dough is not something to get super excited about.

Look, I’ve had a shedload of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in my lifetime and I’ve had a bucketload of homemade and store bought peanut butter cookies during the decades I’ve been on this planet, so I’m disappointed these taste more like your run-of-the-mill peanut butter cookies than anything that reminds me of the iconic candy I’d steal from a baby.

Pillsbury Reese s Peanut Butter Cookies 2

The peanut butter in a Reese’s PBC has a distinct nutty flavor that I don’t detect with these. I ate the ENTIRE batch on my own over the course of several days, like a leisurely-eating Cookie Monster, and every one I stuffed into my mouth didn’t invoke any tastes, smells, or inkling of the beloved chocolate and peanut butter treat.

Pillsbury Reese s Peanut Butter Cookies 3

As peanut butter cookies, they’re fine, and I enjoyed eating every single one of them. But there’s nothing to distinguish them from any other I’ve had.

For you fork impressions in peanut butter cookies people, do it quickly because the dough gets super sticky if it sits for a little while, making it hard to create the imprint without having a clump of dough stick to your fork.

I can’t say Pillsbury’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cookies are bad, but I can say if I were to hand out these to random folks on the street, I’m sure they would not be able to tell it’s specifically a Reese’s product. By the way, if a stranger on the street offers you a cookie, don’t accept it.

Pros: Good peanut butter cookies. I bet this would make great bread for a Reese’s PBC sandwich. No mess and washing mixing bowls after. How easy it is to steal candy from a baby.
Cons: Not good at capturing Reese’s peanut butter. Nothing to distinguish it from other peanut butter cookies. Hard to make fork impressions in cookie dough. Stealing candy from a baby.

QUICK REVIEW: Krispy Kreme Reese’s Outrageous Chocolate Doughnut

Krispy Kreme Reese s Outrageous Doughnut

What is it?

The latest and (hopefully) greatest follow up to last year’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Doughnut – the Reese’s Outrageous Chocolate Doughnut; inspired by Reese’s latest chocolate bar. The new menu item features a chocolate yeast doughnut dipped in Hershey’s chocolate fudge icing, topped with mini Reese’s Pieces and drizzled with Reese’s peanut butter and salted caramel sauce.

How is it?

Krispy Kreme Reese s Outrageous Doughnut 2

I gotta say, for a non-filled doughnut this is pretty much as good as it gets. The chocolate yeast base is different for Krispy Kreme and carries the same wonderful light and fluffy texture as its Original Glazed but with a pleasantly less sweet chocolate flavor that lays an excellent foundation. It reminds me more of a yeast-cake hybrid in that it’s nice and moist but also ever so slightly dense from the presence of the cocoa.

Krispy Kreme Reese s Outrageous Doughnut 3

The dual action drizzle brings some serious bolts of flavor, almost acting like a lush creamy filling the way it elevates the entire experience beyond a typical iced or glazed. I get more peanut butter than caramel, but the slightly salty sticky drizzles work brilliantly together to emulate the profile of the Outrageous Bar, highlighted by the occasional crunch of Reese’s Pieces.

Is there anything else I need to know?

As with most Krispy creations, this one performs well in the microwave. Popping it in for eight seconds melts the icing on top and softens the cake to a melt-in-your-mouth treat that reminds me of peanut butter hot chocolate. All the flavors combine into one delectably sweet coffee companion that will no doubt disappear in less than 30 seconds.

Conclusion:

This is an awesome doughnut. It lives up to the Reese’s name and brings all the contrast of textures and salty sweet flavors that make Reese’s products the most craveable in the candy aisle.
